ANCIENT BRITAIN TOUR DESCRIPTION

Britain's countryside is filled with reminders of our past from ancient burial grounds to stone monuments that have stood for over 4000 years. For some they continue to be important places of power and energy. This full-day private guided tour explores the most fascinating sites near Bath: Avebury, the West Kennet Long Barrow and Stonehenge.

I will collect you from Bath and drive you to Avebury, home to the world's largest stone circle. The stone circle at Avebury dates back to approx. 2600BC. Walking around the site I will give you an insight into its history and the latest archaeological discoveries. Unlike Stonehenge, visitors are free to wander among the stones and touch them. You may even see people meditating under the stones.

The tour continues with a visit to a site that pre-dates the stone circle - the West Kennet Long Barrow - an ancient burial site that was constructed around 3,600BC. Today it offers one of the best examples of a chambered tomb. Visitors are able to venture inside. A short distance from the tomb is the unusual Silbury Hill, the world's largest pre-historic chalk mound. Built thousands of years ago its purpose remains a mystery to this day.

The tour ends with a guided visit around Britain's most famous monument, Stonehenge. I will guide you around the Visitor Centre and the stone circle and will bring the site to life with stories and the latest discoveries. After exploring Stonehenge I will drive you back to Bath.

During the tour I will take you to a traditional English pub for lunch.

The tour is available daily and starts at 9am. You will return to Bath around 5:30pm.

Pick-up is available from all Bath hotels and central locations in the city - such as the Bath Spa train station.

ADDITIONAL INFO

The tour involves walking on grass and dirt paths which can get muddy when wet so suitable footwear is recommended.
