GLASTONBURY

TOUR

VISIT GLASTONBURY, ITS ABBEY AND THE TOR AND HEAR ABOUT THE TOWN'S LEGENDS AND MYTHS

TOUR DESCRIPTION

I will collect you from your accommodation in Bath at 10:40am and drive you to Glastonbury approximately 1 hour from Bath. Walking through the centre of Glastonbury I will show you the Glastonbury Thorn and explain about its interesting legend. Every Christmas a flowering sprig from the Glastonbury Thorn is sent to the Queen.

We will stop for lunch in Glastonbury (please let me know if you prefer a pub or a small fish and chips restaurant). After lunch we will visit the picturesque ruins and gardens of Glastonbury Abbey. The abbey claimed it was built on the site of the earliest Christian monastic site in Britain and went on to become one of the wealthiest abbeys in the country. Monks found, what they claimed to be, the grave of King Arthur and Guinevere in the grounds of the abbey. During the Medieval Times the abbey was a popular pilgrimage destination as people came to see the grave and the many holy relics of saints that were kept at the abbey.

After visiting the abbey you will have free time (approx. 1 hour) to browse Glastonbury's unusual shops. The last entrance to the Chalice Well is at 4pm so we will head to the Chalice Well at 3:30pm. You will have free time to explore the Chalice Well gardens before we climb up to the Glastonbury Tor. The Glastonbury Tor is one of the most famous landmarks in the region and like the abbey it is steeped in legends. The walk from the bottom of the hill to the top of the hill where the Tor is located takes approximately 20 minutes depending on your fitness. There are around 260 steps and so it is not suitable for those with mobility difficulties. From the top you will be rewarded with panoramic views and I will explain about the legends behind the Tor.

After the tour I will drive you back to Bath, arriving around 6:30pm depending on traffic.
