WELLS AND CHEDDAR TOUR OVERVIEW

Private day tour from Bath to visit the historic cathedral-city of Wells, explore the region's most dramatic scenery and taste famous local produce - Cheddar cheese.

I will take you on a walking tour of Wells, England's smallest city, which has interesting connections to Bath (and my family!) which I will explain on the tour. We will visit its magnificent 13th century cathedral and see the world's 2nd oldest working clock and visit Europe's oldest residential street.

We will also visit Cheddar, the birth-place of the famous cheese. We will visit the only cheese factory in Cheddar which is still making Cheddar cheese using traditional methods. At the factory you will see how the cheese is made and get to try different varieties of their cheese.

We will also explore Cheddar Gorge, England's largest gorge and the most dramatic scenery in the region.

Tour price is £445 for your private group (maximum of 6 people) plus £20 per person e.g. if you are 2 people the total price will be £485. All admission tickets are included. Tour available Monday to Saturday.

WELLS AND CHEDDAR TOUR DESCRIPTION

This full-day tour is a great way to experience the region's attractions near Bath.

I will drive you through the countryside to Wells, England's smallest city, approx. 1 hour from Bath. The city is renowned for its impressive cathedral, its clock which is one of the oldest in the world and a street which is the oldest residential street in Europe - all of which you will visit during our 2 hour private walking tour of Wells. We will also visit the historic Market Place and the Bishops Palace (we do not go inside the Palace). Fans of the cult-film "Hot Fuzz" may recognise a number of the places that we visit as Wells was used as "Sandford" - the main location in the film!

Continuing onto Cheddar we will visit a small Cheddar Cheese factory. Cheddar Cheese was originally created in Cheddar and was a popular cheese for our Kings and Queens! It is now one of the most popular cheeses in the world. We will visit the factory's small Visitor Centre where you can see how the world's most popular cheese is made. During our visit you can taste different varieties of authentic Cheddar Cheese including one which is matured in local caves and you will have the opportunity to purchase these to enjoy on the rest of your holiday.

We will drive through the spectacular Cheddar Gorge, England's largest gorge. The drive through the gorge has been named as the most scenic drive in Britain. You will have the option to walk to my favourite viewpoint on the gorge which gives rewarding panoramic views of the area and the gorge. Alternatively I will drive you to a great viewpoint over the area where no walking is required!

During the tour we will stop for lunch at an English pub.

The tour is available Monday to Saturday and starts at 8:30am and finishes at approximately 5pm.

Pick-up is available from all Bath hotels and central locations in the city - such as the Bath Spa train station. Pick-up is also available from destinations outside of Bath at an additional price (e.g. Bristol) - please contact me for details.

INSIDER TIP: Wells has an outdoor market every Wednesday and Saturday where you can sample and buy local produce and gifts. If you would like to experience this - please select a tour on either a Wednesday or Saturday.

INSIDER TIP 2: The cheese factory offers a VIP experience with their own guide to give a more in-depth experience of how they make their cheese. These are run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays - subject to availability. They are small public tours (max. 8 people) and must be booked in advance. If you are interested in doing this please get in touch before booking the tour.

ADDITIONAL INFO

The walk to the viewpoint on the Cheddar gorge takes approx. 30 minutes (one-way) and includes a steep 20 minute ascent on uneven ground. The trail can be slippery and muddy when there has been rain. This walk is optional depending upon your interest and level of mobility. If you prefer not to do this walk I will drive you to a great viewpoint over the local area where walking is not required.
