The new English 50p coin!
This week I received my first 50p coin featuring King Charles III on the reverse. The new coins recently entered circulation via the country's post offices. This is where I received mine when getting change for a transaction. It marked a historic moment for me as during my lifetime the reverse of the coins had always featured Queen Elizabeth II.
The image of King Charles III is based upon pictures taken from his 70th birthday (he is currently 74 years old). Keeping with tradition - he is facing the opposite direction of his predecessor, Queen Elizabeth II, who faced right on the coins. Unlike the Queen's image he does not wear a crown which has been a tradition for past Kings.
If you are lucky you may receive one of these coins when getting change for a transaction. I will carry this one with me so if you are on a tour with me feel free to ask to see it! For overseas visitors - do not worry - the old 50p coins can still be used. The two coins will run side by side for the foreseeable future. I expect other coins to start bearing the image of King Charles III in 2023 so keep your eyes peeled for them!
