TOUR DESCRIPTION

Day 1 - Monday 14th November

  • In the morning you will be collected from your Southampton hotel at 9:30am.

  • Private transfer to the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath. On route we will stop to visit Salisbury Cathedral and one of Britain's most famous monuments - Stonehenge. I will guide you around both sites to explain about their history and the interesting stories behind them. At Salisbury Cathedral you can see one of only 4 remaining copies of the 1215 Magna Carta! On the journey to Bath we will also have a quick stop to see the ruins of a tiny moated castle.

  • We will reach your accommodation in Bath around 5pm. Your evening will be at leisure.

Day 2 - Tuesday 15th November:

  • I will collect you at 9am and take you on my 3 hour Bath City tour. We will first drive to my favourite viewpoint to give you a great perspective of Bath. We will then continue the tour on foot in the centre of the city where I will show you the famous buildings and streets and tell you about the interesting stories behind them, the city and past residents.

  • The tour will end at 12pm by the historic Pump Rooms where you will have afternoon tea (unaccompanied). The Pump Rooms used to be the place where people went to drink the water and featured in novels by Jane Austen.

  • After your afternoon tea you will visit the Roman Baths museum (unaccompanied). The museum provides complimentary audio guides and you can see the remains of the ancient Roman spa that was built over one of the hot springs. After visiting the museum your time will be at leisure - you may like to browse Bath's shops, visit another museum or experience the city's hot springs at the Thermae Bath Spa.

  • Overnight in Bath

Day 3 - Wednesday 16th November:

  • I will collect you at 9am and will drive you to the cathedral-city of Wells - England's smallest city, approx. 1 hour away.

  • You will have a private walking tour of Wells which includes a visit to Europe's oldest residential street as well as the beautiful Wells Cathedral which dates back to the 13th century and houses the world's second oldest working clock.

  • After lunch at a village pub I will drive you to the quirky town of Glastonbury. We will visit the picturesque ruins and gardens of Glastonbury Abbey. The abbey claimed it was built on the site of the earliest Christian monastic site in Britain and went on to become one of the wealthiest abbeys in the country.

  • After visiting the abbey you will have the option to climb to the Glastonbury Tor or spend more time in the centre visiting some of Glastonbury's unique and unusual shops!

  • The Glastonbury Tor is one of the most famous landmarks in the region and like the abbey it is steeped in legends. If you decide to visit the Tor I will show you the location of the White and Red Springs which are said to have healing properties. The walk from the bottom of the hill to the top of the hill where the Tor is located takes approximately 20 minutes depending on your fitness. There are around 260 steps and so it is not suitable for those with mobility difficulties. From the top you will be rewarded with panoramic views and I will explain about the legends behind the Tor.

  • After the tour I will drive you back to Bath, arriving around 6:30pm depending on traffic. Overnight in Bath.

Day 4 - Thursday 17th November:

  • I will collect you at 9:30am and drive you to Avebury, home to the world's largest stone circle, approx. 50 minutes away. Few tourists know about Avebury and unlike Stonehenge visitors are free to wander among the stones and touch them. You may even see people meditating next to them. Walking around the site I will give you an insight into its history and the latest archaeological discoveries.

  • After exploring Avebury we will drive to 2 famous villages near Bath. The picturesque villages of Lacock and Castle Combe have changed little over the centuries. Their charming appearance has made them popular filming locations e.g. Harry Potter, Downtown Abbey, Dr Doolittle and War Horse have all been filmed in the villages.

  • Walking around the villages I will show you traditional village features and places used in films and will tell you stories about the villages. Castle Combe is located within the Cotswolds and was once voted the prettiest village in England. I will explain about the Cotswolds and some of its unusual stories including why a sheep appears on its logo!

  • At the end of the tour I will treat you to the famous English Cream Tea. You haven't experienced England until you have tried one of these! We will return to Bath around 6:30pm.
