TOUR DESCRIPTION
Day 1 - Monday 4th November
-
I will collect you from your accommodation in Bath at 8am and drive you to the Westonbirt Arboretum, approx. 45 minutes from Bath. The arboretum was created almost 200 years ago by a Victorian horticulturist. Today it encompasses 600 acres and has over 2,500 species of trees. It is a popular place to visit during the Autumn with the changing colours of the leaves. We will walk around the arboretum to experience this.
-
After visiting the arboretum we will drive to Dyrham Park, a 17th Century stately home set in extensive grounds. We will visit the house and some of the gardens. At the end of our visit we will drive back to Bath.
-
We will be exposed to the weather so please bear this in mind for your clothing. If you would like to walk off the hard path at the arboretum to explore some of the glades please wear shoes suitable for muddy conditions. I am not an expert on Dyrham Park and will be more of a companion than a guide at this site.
-
I will keep our lunch plans flexible. There are food stalls and a cafe at the Arboretum and a cafe at Dyrham Park. We will return to Bath around 4 - 4:30pm.
Day 2 - Tuesday 5th November
-
I will collect you at 9am and drive you to the prehistoric site of Avebury, approx. 1 hour from Bath. Avebury is home to the remains of the world's largest stone circle. Walking around the site I will give you an insight into its history and the latest archaeological discoveries. Unlike Stonehenge, visitors are free to wander among the stones and touch them. We will also visit the West Kennet Long Barrow - an ancient burial site that pre-dates Avebury. Today it offers one of the best examples of a chambered tomb.
-
After lunch at a village pub we will visit the famous village of Lacock. The village has changed little over the centuries making it a popular filming location e.g. Harry Potter and Downton Abbey have been filmed in the village. Walking around the village I will show you traditional village features and places used in films. During the drive to Lacock I will make a detour to show you one of the region's famous White Horses. We can also see if a small exhibit on crop circles is open.
-
We will return to Bath around 5pm. We will be walking on grass at Avebury and we will be exposed to the weather so please bear this in mind for your clothing.
Day 3 - Wednesday 6th November:
-
I will collect you at 10:30am and drive you to Gloucester, approx. 1 hour away. We will visit the magnificent Gloucester Cathedral where I will show you some of its famous features such as the beautiful cloisters and the tomb of King Edward II.
-
After a light lunch in Gloucester we will continue to Stratford-upon-Avon approx. 1 hour away. I will take you on a short waking tour of the town and show you the church where Shakespeare is buried.
-
After dinner I will wait for you whilst you enjoy a show at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. After the show I will drive you back to Bath. The journey will take approx. 2 hours and we will reach Bath around 11:30pm-12am.
