Enjoying Bath's Hot Springs in January

Thermae Bath Spa Rooftop Pool
The rooftop pool at the Thermae Bath Spa

The city of Bath has the only hot springs in the country. These springs led to the Romans building the country's most important religious spa over them and resulted in the beautiful Georgian architecture that we have today as visitors flocked to the city to enjoy the waters and use them for health reasons.

Today visitors can see the remains of the religious spa at the interesting Roman Baths museum. You are no longer allowed to bathe in the waters at the Roman Baths - however you are able to bathe in them at the modern Thermae Bath Spa. The spa has a large pool, a Wellness Suite with steam rooms and an infra-red room and, the highlight for many, a rooftop outdoor pool. The spa also offers massages and treatments which require advance booking. If you would like to visit the Thermae Bath Spa I recommend visiting on weekdays as weekends can get very busy.

The Thermae Bath Spa also has a separate small pool called the Cross Bath which can be hired out exclusively for you and up to 10 people. They also offer public sessions at the Cross Bath which children aged 12 -15 can join with an accompanying adult - children aged under 16 are not allowed in the main Thermae Bath Spa.

At the beginning of each year the Thermae Bath Spa is closed for maintenance. In 2020 - the Thermae Bath Spa will be closed between the 6th and 19th January. If you are visiting Bath during this time and would like to enjoy the hot springs then this is possible at the nearby luxury Gainsborough Hotel. The hotel has a spa which uses the local hot springs and they offer a Spa Day for non-guests which includes a spa treatment, use of their three natural thermal pools, steam room and sauna. It also includes a 2 course spa lunch or afternoon tea. Prices start from £150 and reservations are essential.

If you are visiting Bath why not do my Bath Tour to give you a great introduction to the city and then follow it up with a relaxing session at one of the spas - a great day out!
